Another hot summer day, deep quarantine, summer 2020. Determined to find time to jog and draw (during short breaks under shade of tree) ~ these exercise excursions brought me peace during challenging times.

Several birds were seated on the freshly mown grass ahead. Rhythmic dots and strokes of ink captured my efforts in observing the landscape.

A few minutes later, I rolled up my paper, put it and the brush-pen back into my runner's pouch, and resumed jogging in the heat. Was looking forward to reviewing it later, in an air-conditioned space, enjoying a cool glass of water.

Another hot summer day, deep into quarantine times, summer of 2020. Still determined to include art-making in my daily life, jogging and drawing was a kind of medicine during these challenging days.

It was very quiet, being one of the hottest hours of the day. And there was zero traffic, everyone was working from home.

After swiping away ants crawling up my ankles, I moved a few feet over and worked on the back of the paper for this ink study (see "Taughannock Blvd Bridge... (front)" in this Collection).

This art is a celebration of getting outside and drawing "en plein air"- even if just for a few minutes.

August 16, 2020 - Another hot summer day, deep into quarantine times, summer of 2020. Still determined to include art-making in my daily life, jogging and drawing was a kind of medicine during these challenging days.

This time, within a few seconds into drawing, I felt ants crawling up my ankles. After swiping those away, I shifted over a few feet and started over. I turned the paper over and tried another attempt at this ink study (see "Taughannock Blvd Bridge... (back)" in this Collection).

Determined to include art-making in my daily life, I made this drawing while out on a jog. It was a hot summer day, deep into quarantine times, summer of 2020. I was running through Cass Park, Ithaca, NY. Stopped for a short break under the shade of a tree, then made this drawing with a brush pen on paper, which I brought rolled up in my little runner's pouch.

The paper became sweaty, the humidity and heat was intense. I spent no more than 10 minutes studying the leaves and grass by my feet, quick and expressive brush strokes following the natural forms. When I got home, I flattened the paper by pressing it under a couple of large books.

This high resolution scan is the first of this collection, celebrating getting outside and drawing "en plein air"- even if just for a few minutes.

Reminiscing this art excursion from years ago. My daughter's interest in drawing nature from observation inspired the trip. We drove up to Sunset Park, set up easels, and studied the view of Cayuga Lake off in the distance.

I worked with black and white charcoals on toned paper, dazzled by the flecks of sunlight shimmering on the water.
